Bella and George

Today I read a very inspirational story. Bella is 11 years old and has a rare genetic disease called Morquio Syndrome.  Her parents got her a 131 pound Great Dane as a Service Dog. This Dane walks her to all her classes and naps during those classes. George even helps her play on the playground. I love these kind of stories where we see humanity and nature working in harmony.

I have added a LINK to a Huffington Post story about them. They have a FACEBOOK page as well.

Taste of Blood

Yesterday, We took the kids out to hunt for Easter Eggs. Of course we brought our Danes with us. We had recently moved the goats into their own goat pen that I built. As soon as our mother Dane saw them, she wanted to play and she ran to them. The two goats are named Whisper and Spring. Whisper is a little skittish and not too trusting. As soon as he saw Momma Dane, Emma, she became scared and jumped right over the back wall of the pen. This made Emma want to play, so Emma chased her. When Emma caught her she tried holding her down by the neck and punctured the goats skin.

I described this to some friends at work who told me that I have to have Momma Dane put down. Once she has tasted blood, she will never be the same and you can never trust her again. Particularly around children.

I have spent the day thinking about this. I would never put her down. Anyone who knows how Great Danes Play, know that they are so gentle. the goat kept thrashing and that's how he got hurt.

The truth is, Police dogs taste blood every day and never get put down, they have to be safe in public and around kids and they are not considered 'Mad' because of the taste of blood.

Also, Some dogs are used to protect sheep and cattle herds from coyotes and other predators. When they fight these guys off, they aren't put down.

My Danes have eaten more than one or two raw steaks that we were preparing for dinner. You turn your back for a second and they jump at the opportunity. Besides, they are tall enough to see whats on the counter.

I have concluded that this mandate that we put Momma Dane down is absurd. She is family and it was an accident.

More Internet Dating

10 Days ago, Our Emma had her second batch of puppies. These are pedigree puppies from a good lineage. It was a great learning experience for Our 4 year old to witness this. She learned how to handle the puppies. She even learned how to help clean them up and make sure the get to nursing right away. It was an all night affair that had some drama. She even had 2 of them at the same time.

This is Our Emma and her 12 Puppies

Some of My favorite Great Dane Jokes

A man takes his Great Dane to the vet and says,
"My dog's cross-eyed, is there anything you can do for him?"
"Well," says the vet, "let's have a look at him."
So he picks the dog up and examines his eyes, then checks his teeth.
Finally, he says "I'm going to have to put him down."
"What? Because he's cross-eyed?"

"No, because he's really heavy."

A man tied his Great Dane outside the grocery store and went inside to do some shopping. A little while later, another man came over to him and asked him if the Great Dane outside was his. He told him it was and then the man said, "Well, I'm sorry to tell you this, but I believe my dog just killed your dog.

The owner of the Great Dane looked at him and asked what kind of dog he had, to which the man replied that he had a Chihuahua.

"A Chihuahua??? How on earth could my Great Dane have been killed by a Chihuahua???"

"Well, I'm afraid your dog choked on him.
